Birthday Girl

October 7th was a magical day. My family happily walked along to the pumpkin patch, talking, laughing and having leaf fights.
Kit and Gracie chatted like they had known that they were sisters their whole lives and not a couple weeks.
What about me, you ask? I lagged behind, listening to music on my Ipod and being silent. Sure, it was Sophie's birthday and it was supposed to be a good day. But I just didn't care. I didn't care about anything anymore.
We arrived at last. My legs were tired from walking, so I crashed to the grass.

"This is a pumpkin patch?" Kit said. "There's not even a sign."
"Well, it's not exactly a pumpkin patch...it's our friend's yard," Rosie explained. "She lets us get our pumpkins here every year."
Changing the subject, Rosie asked, "Should we eat or pick a pumpkin first?"

"Eat!" Sadie cried.

"I'm pretty hungry," Gracie agreed.

"How about you, birthday girl?" Rosie asked Sophie, smiling.

"EAT!" sang Sophie very loudly. Kit giggled and I ignored her.

So, we unpacked all of our food. Rosie handed out plates. Kit didn't try to talk to me, and I was glad because I didn't want to talk to her.

Everyone got a cheese stick, (well, except Kit, who claimed to be allergic to dairy) fruit, noodle salad, and a cookie.

When we were all done eating and all packed up, Sophie wandered the rows of pumpkins for what seemed like an eternity.

Finally, she picked up a medium sized, yellow orange pumpkin with a very long stem. "It's perfect!" she exclaimed.
Rosie grabbed the pumpkin and paid for it before Sophie could change her mind.

We headed home after that. I pulled my earbuds out of my ears and gave Sophie a somewhat tight birthday hug. I brightened up just a little after that. Maybe, just maybe, I wouldn't hate Kit forever.
